Last year's contestants

Pie Time!

Get ready for pie!!!!

Our fourth annual pie contest will be held at Ijams Nature Center this year and all proceeds will go to our local YMCA Community Giving Gardens.

Pie categories are best sweet and best savory. Please have your pies in by 5:30 to be judged. Winners will take home lovely prizes from our favorite local businesses. We will also award an audience favorite. $1 buys a vote for audience favorite. You can vote as many times as you want.

Entrance is a pie or $7 per person. To qualify for the contest, all pies must be homemade with at least one local ingredient. Pies will be judged based on external characteristics (shape, surface), internal characteristics (texture, crust) and flavor.

REMINDER: we strive for zero waste events. Please bring your own place setting (plate, utensils and drinking glass/mug). This is a BYOB event.

About the YMCA Gardens:
In 2012, The Davis Family YMCA started a Community Giving Garden and last year the Cansler YMCA broke ground on a garden. The Davis Family YMCA’s garden has grown to include a hydroponics operation, several soil raised beds, a composting program and a chicken coop. It is tended by several volunteers, including children from the Y’s child watch program. Since March, the Cansler YMCA’s garden has grown to include 9 raised beds, an additional tiered bed, a compost bin, a drip irrigation system, and a lovely pollinator garden. Combined, these gardens have yielded 2041 lbs. of produce to date. All food is donated to Manna House of Knoxville, FISH Pantry of Knoxville, and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church of East Knoxville.

Proceeds from our pie party will help expand the gardens to include a rabbit hutch/worm bin composting system at the Cansler Family YMCA and a rooftop hydroponics garden at the Lindsay Young Downtown YMCA.

They intend to grow this program indefinitely- there are only a handful of Y’s across the country which have gardens, but the YMCA does and always has emphasized nutrition as a key component of overall fitness, so the possibilities for community gardening and education within the organization are limitless.
